Intense Pulse Light Therapy (IPL)

What is IPL Therapy for Dry Eye?

OptiLight is a light-based treatment that uses precise, intense broad-spectrum light to address dry eye disease due to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). MGD is the most common cause of dry eye disease, accounting for about 86% of cases. The treatment addresses inflammation, which is one of the key underlying factors in MGD. OptiLight was specifically developed to reach the delicate contours of the treated area safely, effectively and gently using the OPT™ technology.

When Should I Get An Eye Exam?

The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends annual comprehensive eye exams for everyone to optimize visual function, monitor eye health changes, and detect sight-threatening and systemic health conditions early. This proactive approach ensures better long-term eye health. For children, it’s especially important to receive a comprehensive eye exam before starting school. While vision screenings can provide a basic assessment of visual clarity, they are typically conducted by untrained individuals and do not evaluate overall visual function.

At inVista, we begin seeing children as young as 3 years old and encourage annual exams for all our patients to support lifelong eye health.

Who is a Good Candidates for IPL Treatment?

IPL therapy is ideal for patients with chronic dry eye caused by meibomina gland dysnfunction (MGD), ocular rosacea, or eyelid inflammation. You may be a good candidate if you experience burning, redness, irritation, fluctuating vision or dryness that does not improve with artifical tears alone.

Long-Term Benefits of IPL for Dry Eye Relief

Targets Inflammation

The light energy penetrates the skin and reduces inflammation, which is a major cause of dry eye disease and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).

Improves Oil Gland Function

By reducing inflammation, the treatment allows the meibomian glands to work more effectively, improving tear quality.

Triggers Natural Healing

The light stimulates collagen production and rejuvenates the skin around the eyes, improving overall eye health and appearance.

Reduces Blood Vessels (Telangiectasia)

It helps close off abnormal blood vessels near the eye that contribute to chronic inflammation.

Anti-Microbial Benefits

IPL also destroys bacteria and demodex mites that may be living on the eyelids, which can worsen dry eye symptoms.

The treatment is non-invasive and quick, usually taking around 10-15 minutes once the face is prepped. Most patients experience relief from dry eye symptoms after a series of 4 treatments, spaced out over a few weeks.
